Guard your heart

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. — Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)

Our hearts hold so many emotions, and as Scripture warns, “The heart is deceitful above all things.” That’s why guarding our hearts is essential. What we allow into our hearts influences our actions, decisions, and the direction of our lives.

Here is what I’ve learned recently, especially as I’ve sought counsel:

When we immerse ourselves in God’s Word, we equip ourselves with His truth. As Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” The Word becomes a shield, protecting our hearts from negativity.

What we watch, listen to, and engage with can either nourish or harm our hearts. We must choose things that are pure, lovely, and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8).

I’ve started checking in on my heart throughout the day, especially when I feel off. I ask myself questions.

Why am I angry? What is causing this emotion? It might feel overwhelming at first, but healing often does. I don’t want to become bitter or blame others. Over time, I’ve started identifying my triggers more quickly.

To keep my heart pure, I need to be intentional. I spend time reflecting and getting rid of the “muck” that builds up in my life.

Some days are easier than others, but I’ve learned to identify when I’m dealing with doubt, comparison, jealousy, or past hurts. The more I know my heart, the quicker I can rebuke negative thoughts and speak life over myself.

In the past, neglecting this awareness led to negative thinking, unforgiveness, jealousy, and bitterness, which took root and shaped me into someone I didn’t want to be.

One of my favorite verses is 2 Corinthians 10:5: “Take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.” The first time I heard it, my pastor shared it with me, and it has stuck with me since.

I strive to align my heart with God’s truth and bring everything to Him. I ask Him to purify my heart daily.

“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? Jeremiah 17:9

I encourage you to do a little heart  surgery now and then.

Take care of your heart

You are loved, seen and never forgotten.
